The book took shape in undergraduate and graduate courses at Xavier University in Cincinnati and at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. I have intentionally preserved its textbook design in the hope that other teachers will find it a useful tool in courses on interreligious dialogue, Christianity and world religions, and christology. The first eight chapters attempt an accurate presentation and a careful critique of current thinking on religious pluralism; the last two chapters try to break new ground. The ten chapters can fit neatly into a semester of fourteen weeks, or even more neatly into a quarter of ten weeks. (In a semester-long course, I found that students welcomed an additional week of discussion for the chapters on the Catholic and theocentric models and especially for the final chapters on christology and the practice of dialogue.) The supplementary readings for each chapter have been carefully chosen. They are brief and allow students to carry on further explorations into primary sources or differing opinions.
